Media Release Friday 24 January 2014

Today, Member for Brindabella Nicole Lawder will undergo a mammogram to encourage more Canberra women over the age of 40 to get their breasts checked and provide early detection of breast cancer.

Ms Lawder will take advantage of the free mammograms for women over the age of 40 conducted by BreastScreen ACT.

“Like many Canberrans I’ve been touched personally by the toll breast cancer has taken on some of my friends and family members. I want to send the message that screening every two years to detect cancer early is the key to surviving this brutal disease,” Ms Lawder said.

“Recent research has found the ACT falls behind other jurisdictions when it comes to screening rates, so I want the ACT to be more aware and vigilant when it comes to checking for the early signs of breast cancer,” Ms Lawder concluded.

BreastScreen ACT provides screening clinics in the ACT at 1 Moore Street in the City and the Phillip Health Centre in Woden. You can ring 13 20 50 to make an appointment.
