Media Release Tuesday 10 December 2013

New Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services, Housing and Environment Nicole Lawder is looking forward to the challenges ahead as she becomes part of the Canberra Liberals shadow ministry.

“After learning the ropes of the Legislative Assembly since arriving in June this year I’m excited to take on three portfolios that I’m passionate about and have experience working with,” Ms Lawder said today.

“I’m attuned to the major issues in the community and housing sectors having been CEO of Homelessness Australia and CEO of Deafness Forum of Australia before starting my political career. Now I’m thrilled to be able to make a greater contribution to our community through ACT politics.

“As Member for Brindabella and through my new role as Shadow Minister for the Environment I’ll be lobbying hard to make sure the government follows through on its promise to develop the Tuggeranong wetlands. I’ll also work to merge all environmental functions under one ACT agency as they’re currently split between the ESDD and TAMS.

“I’ll be focussing on developing the Canberra Liberals policy for more affordable housing in the ACT while critically evaluating the government’s affordable housing action plan.

“I recognise Family and Community Services will be a huge challenge on the back of several damning reports into child protection services. I’ll be working to make sure child safety is a priority in Canberra.

“I’m looking forward to the challenging work ahead as I take my place in the Canberra Liberals shadow ministry,” Ms Lawder concluded.
