Shadow Minister for Seniors Nicole Lawder will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly today, calling on the Labor-Greens Government to investigate and implement changes to the Age-Friendly City Plan 2020-2024, to improve accessibility for those living with dementia in Canberra.

Ms Lawder said introducing and normalising dementia friendly design practises doesn’t have to be difficult or come at a significant financial cost.

“It can be as simple as selecting carpet that doesn’t have patterns or installing additional lighting,” said Ms Lawder.

“Dementia is a terrible, debilitating disease which unfortunately is a lot more common than most people realise.

“Sadly, there is still a stigma around dementia, people don’t like talking about it. The reality is most people are going to encounter it either themselves or through a loved one.

“Until there is a cure for dementia, there is always more we can do to make life easier for those living with the disease and supporting their carers.

“Canberra is a city that should be inclusive to all, especially for those most vulnerable in our community.

“If this Labor-Greens Government means what it says about diversity and inclusivity, they must support this motion,” Ms Lawder concluded.

According to Dementia Australia, there are an estimated 472,000 Australians living with dementia in 2021.It is the second leading cause of death of Australians.
