It’s terrific that the Federal government has committed extra funding to improve the water quality across the ACT and particularly in and around Lake Tuggeranong, Member for Brindabella and Shadow Minister for Environment Nicole Lawder said today.

“I’m delighted the funding for Phase two of the ACT’s Basin Priority Project will see around $26 million for water quality enhancement for Lake Tuggeranong and its surrounds. The lake has been suffering and this funding is badly needed,” Ms Lawder said.

“Projects will be focused on creating a cleaner lake by improving the quality of water entering through upstream systems, thereby improving odour issues and making the lake cleaner and safer for recreation.

Specific projects will include:

- Filtering improvements for Kambah, Wanniassa and Isabella Plains drains.

- Sediment removal and trapping in the Kambah and Wanniassa drains.

- Modification of Isabella Pond and Isabella Lake improving biodiversity.

“The whole package will also fund water quality projects across other parts of the ACT, which will aid our other major lakes and total up to $76 million. I look forward to water quality improvements aiding the environment and making our parks, wetlands and lakes more amenable for Canberrans,” Ms Lawder concluded.
