Canberra cyclist Karl Brown will tomorrow embark on a journey from the Legislative Assembly to Sydney and then to Wollongong raising money for multiple sclerosis (MS). I’ll be proud to send him off, Member for Brindabella Nicole Lawder said today.

"Karl has been personally affected having family members and friends with MS. He’ll be riding to Sydney tomorrow and Friday before taking part in the 2014 MS Gong ride from Sydney to Wollongong on Sunday," Ms Lawder said.

"Karl’s aim is to reach his fundraising target of $1500, but is keen to raise as much as possible and anyone can donate through the following link: http://register.gongride.org.au/2014-Sydney-to-Gong-Bike-Ride/KarlB

"MS is a debilitating disease which attacks the central nervous system causing numerous symptoms including fatigue, blurred vision and in some severe cases, paralysis.

"I’ll be seeing Karl off tomorrow morning at 7am from the Legislative Assembly car park on the southern side of the Assembly building. I wish him all the best as he does what many Canberrans do in raising money for good causes," Ms Lawder concluded.

With more than 45,000 carers in the ACT, Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services Nicole Lawder is pushing for an increased awareness of the work carers do in our community.

"October 12th to 18th was Carers’ Week and it’s important to acknowledge the commitment given by the carers in our community but also to the organisations out there that assist carers in this vital role. These roles are emotionally, financially and physically very draining," Ms Lawder said today.

"It has been estimated that carers provide 1.32 billion hours of care each year in Australia and I will move a motion in the Legislative Assembly today recognising their work.

"There are many people in the community who care for someone and would not even consider themselves a carer. These people commit countless hours to helping those in need, whether it is a family member, a friend or a neighbour," Ms Lawder concluded.
